Your baby is borrowing your nervous system

The science of co-regulation, gently explained.

7 min read

I want to tell you about the 3AM hour.

Not because I have a solution to it. I don’t. Nobody does. But because I have sat in it, on the floor of a nursery, in the small blue light of a monitor, with a baby who would not, would not, would not settle, and I have learnt something in those hours that I wish someone had leant across the bed and told me.

Here is what I learnt.

The 3AM hour is not asking you to fix your baby. It is asking you to breathe.

It is asking you to notice, before you reach for the app, before you google whether your baby is teething, before you compare her to the neighbour’s baby who ‘sleeps through’, that you are also a body, and your body is also tired, and your body is also asking for something.

The science of why she cannot settle when you cannot settle

Babies do not self-regulate. This is not a failure of your parenting, it is neurology. A baby’s nervous system in the first months of life is dependent on the nervous system of the adult who is holding her. This is called co-regulation, and it is one of the most quietly powerful truths of the earliest years.

What it means, in practice, is this: when you are dysregulated, when your breath is short, your shoulders are around your ears, your jaw is clenched, your baby feels it. Not because she is manipulating you. Because she is wired to feel what you feel. She is borrowing your calm.

And if you don’t have calm to lend, she cannot borrow it.

What the 3AM hour is actually asking

This is the part that changed my life.

The 3AM hour is not asking you to be a better mother. It is not asking you to try harder, to soothe faster, to check the app again. It is asking you to put the baby down for one minute, if she is safe, and breathe. To sit on the floor and put your hand on your own chest. To feel the small warm weight of your own heart. To remember that you are also a mother of someone, you were mothered once, too, imperfectly, and here you are, still here, doing this.

The 3AM hour is asking you to co-regulate with yourself, before you co-regulate with her.

You cannot pour from an empty vessel. And you cannot lend calm you do not have.

One practice you can hold tonight

If you are reading this at 3AM, put your phone down after this sentence. Put a hand on your chest. Breathe in for four counts, hold for two, breathe out for six. Do it three times.

Then pick her up.

I promise you, she will feel the difference.

With care, Gayle.
