Twenty-three years ago, I was a corporate lawyer in the City. I became a mother at 27. I was confused, overwhelmed, and I had never held a baby in my life.
I knew I wanted to be an amazing mum. But I did not know how.
Then I went to a baby massage class with my daughter Emily. And in that one hour, everything changed.
I realised the power of being present. The power of listening. I did not need to know all the answers. I did not need to be perfect. I just needed to be willing to listen, and learn, and grow with Emily.
So I left my corporate career. I trained with the IAIM to become a baby massage instructor. That was the start of a long journey, retraining with some of the world’s best teachers in prenatal and postnatal care, somatic practices, and parent-baby wellness.
I went on to found Blossom & Berry, now the world’s leading parent and baby wellness training school. I set up a charity in Malawi helping parents and babies. I became a TEDx speaker. A published author. And over twenty-three years, I trained over 2,000 teachers who have reached millions of families across the world.
But here is the truth: I had three kids in three and a half years. I did not have a lot of time. I did not have a lot of money. And I did not really have a lot of idea what I was doing.
So I turned to simple practices. Practices that made me feel good and made my children feel good.
These somatic practices became my life’s work — studied in depth across the world over the last twenty-three years, shared with my community of teachers, and now gathered into HERE MAMA.
I created HERE MAMA because I knew that these practices are human medicines. They are things all humans have within us that help us feel better, regulate our nervous systems, and be more present. They are ancient wisdoms, proven by science.
I also understood that a baby’s first language is their felt senses. Before words, before thought, babies learn through their bodies. They communicate love, trust, and safety through the languages of the body, because the right side of the brain develops long before the left. Babies are learning in an emotional, relational way, not a cognitive way.
And yet there is so much out there pushing towards developmental milestones related to reading, writing, and achieving. But the cornerstone, the foundation of it all, is how babies know love. The development of a baby’s nervous system comes from love and nurturing care.
I also understood the philosophy that love creates love. That mothers are mirrors to their babies. If a mother feels seen, heard, regulated, loved, and supported, then she can give that to her baby. And if she does not, she cannot.
And I understood the importance of community. We are not supposed to mother alone. Sometimes mothers wonder why they feel like they cannot cope and it is because it is not normal or natural to parent in isolation. It is just how modern society has developed.
